Dentist in Brunswick, ME Shares Tooth Enamel Tips

Over time, our natural tooth enamel begins to wear away. Weak tooth enamel can result in discolored, sensitive, and vulnerable teeth. How can we protect our teeth from decay and strengthen enamel? Your dentist shares simple tips below:

Food and Drink

It is important to limit the consumption of food and beverages that are high in sugar. The bacteria and acids produced by these items can soften enamel and cause it to wear.

Calcium found in food and drink such as milk and cheese do the exact opposite! They help to counter act lingering acids while protecting and strengthening tooth enamel.

Don’t Overbrush

The brushing of teeth is an essential part of our daily routines, however, don’t over do it. Dentists typically recommend brushing twice a day for two minutes each time. Overbrushing, or brushing too hard or too fast can have a negative effect on your tooth enamel.

If you consume any food or drink high in acid, wait about an hour before picking up your tooth brush. Brushing on top of soft tooth enamel may inflict more harm than good.

Fluoride

Fluoride has been referred to at “nature’s cavity fighter” by the American Dental Association. This “cavity fighter” can be found in a variety of toothpastes and mouthwashes. Fluoride protects teeth from cavities and helps them build resistance from lingering acid and bacteria.

Teeth Grinding

The grinding of teeth is a common reaction to stress. Many people are unaware they have this grinding habit as it occurs during sleeping hours. You can protect your teeth with a custom mouth guard to wear at night.

Avoid Dry Mouth

Staying hydrated and chewing sugarless gum are two ways to keep regular flowing levels of saliva. Saliva helps to fight the effects of foods high in acidity and works to wash away plaque and bacteria that can result in cavities.
